Adding Custom Properties to D3 Visualizations in MicroStrategy 10

Previously, we published a video showing how easy it is to add new custom D3 Visualizations to MicroStrategy 10 in less than a minute. After creating a D3 visualization, you may find that users want to format the widget. Instead of making code changes for each dashboard, you can add properties to the visualization that make it customizable. To do this, you will need an already completed D3 visualization. For my example, I will be using a Scatter Plot d3 visualization that was created for a client. Based on the data they had per dashboard, they wanted to format their axes, add a legend, and/or change the size of their data points.

Pandera’s Proven MicroStrategy 10 Upgrade Process

Thank you to all of you who attended the North Carolina User Group Meeting on September 30, 2015. As some of you know, we had a very collaborative session during which we talked about the rigorous upgrade testing and actual upgrade process/timeline that we followed in one of our most thoroughly tested and effectively implemented projects. As some of you veterans might recall years ago, MicroStrategy releases a Major Upgrade approximately every 4-5 years. These major upgrades typically come with significant change, and with significant change, thorough testing and validation is required. The version 9.x to 10.x upgrade introduces substantial changes, not only in the analytical engine, but also through new tools, processes, and of course the actual user interface. By designing and following an upgrade plan, including test cases and mock upgrades, you are more likely to experience a successful and stream-lined upgrade process.

5 Reasons Your Business Needs a Project Management Office

Do you hate when your projects are running over budget but your people are under-utilized? A strong Project Management Office (PMO) may be just what your organization needs. Every company has projects, large or small, but not many create the foundation of a Project Management Office to align and support their strategic business goals. A strong PMO can drive success and change, increase profitability and improve performance. Here are some common indications that a PMO would benefit your business:

Self-Service Quick Tip: Create a Team Folder Within Your “My Reports.”

This is a simple out-of-the-box feature, but one I see VERY underused in my experience on projects. Getting people to share their work will drive adoption, but a lot of times we overcomplicate it. I hope this post can help! In your environment, there is probably a shared area specific people publish canned reports for your MicroStrategy implementation. Most customers I’ve worked with have spent significant amounts of time locking down certain locations so that users don’t mess up their precious folder structure. To place something in the shared area often requires an e-mail to move a report, a designated user to move the report, an email to say it’s done, and then another email to the audience to let them know where to find the report. To me, that sounds like a crazy-complicated process to complete a pretty simple task.

Adding a D3 Visualization to MicroStrategy 10 in Under 60 Seconds

Now in MicroStrategy 10, any D3 visualization can be added – especially the ones that users have already shared to the MicroStrategy GitHub library.

Can you copy? Yes? Can you paste? Yes?

Do you have write access to the plugins folder on the web server? Okay, maybe not.

But if you do, then follow the steps in this 60-second video to add visualizations that other people have already coded for use in MicroStrategy. If you don’t have write access, still watch the video, and then show it to the person who manages the MicroStrategy Web Server (and make sure he/she knows how to copy and paste).

Responsive Design and the End of Platform-Specific Design Constraints

MicroStrategy users and developers will recognize this challenge instantly: create documents for desktop web, create documents for tablets, create documents for mobile phones, and then struggle to keep each of them individually updated and maintain identical functionality across all platforms as enhancements are released. The documents created for mobile phones were optimized for the latest iPhone 6, and are nearly unusable to users with an iPhone 4 or a Samsung Galaxy S III Mini. The documents created for tablets were optimized for Microsoft Surface 3’s larger screen size, and will bleed off the edge of the screen if the user tries to access it from an iPad Mini. To make things worse, each of these documents needs to be edited by different developers independently each time there is a change request, while somehow maintaining consistency. What if it didn’t have to be so complicated? (more…)

Harnessing the Power of MicroStrategy 10 Visual Insight to Develop Rich, On-the-fly Analysis and Visualizations

MicroStrategy is one of the original leaders in the BI space, and with the launch of the newest version of MicroStrategy 10, Visual Insight has been completely revamped, taking a more agile approach to BI reporting and data analysis.

The all new MicroStrategy 10 is built to take advantage of HTML5, compared to its prior versions which relied on Adobe Flash for building web applications. This was acceptable when much of the internet used Flash as a common framework, but HTML5 is increasingly supplanting Flash as the go-to development framework.

Pandera’s advisory experts are ready to discuss helping you leverage the features included in the newest release of Visual Insight, and would love the opportunity to help you identify the optimal upgrade solution to roll out the tool’s new features securely in your environment.

Here are some of the key new features available in MicroStrategy 10 Visual Insight:
